Microcrystalline Wax

Enhanced Flexibility and Adhesion for Specialty Application

At Royal Paraffin, we supply high-quality Microcrystalline Wax, a high-quality petroleum refining byproduct, with a fine crystalline structure, improved flexibility, and good adhesion. In contrast to traditional paraffin wax, which is largely a blend of straight-chain alkanes, microcrystalline wax contains a high proportion of iso-paraffinic (branched) and naphthenic hydrocarbons, which provide an extended range of performance characteristics.

What Makes Microcrystalline Wax Special?

This wax is made up chiefly of saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons of high molecular weight, producing a product which is:

  • Darker in colour
  • More viscous
  • Tackier
  • More elastic
  • Higher in density and molecular weight
  • Higher in melting point than regular paraffin wax

These physical properties allow Royal Paraffin’s microcrystalline wax to perform in challenging applications that call for elasticity, adhesion, and heat stability.

Elasticity & Adhesion Benefits

The occurrence of non-linear molecular chains imparts a high degree of flexibility and binding ability to this wax. It is especially ideal for:

  • Beauty products
  • Adhesives and sealants
  • Food-grade coatings
  • Pharmaceutical applications

Its ability to retain structure while under stress makes it a valuable ingredient in any formulation needing long-term cohesion and function.

Grades and Technical Specifications

At Royal Paraffin, we produce and qualify our microcrystalline waxes to strict ASTM specifications for consistency and quality. Some key parameters are:

  • Congealing Point – ASTM D938
  • Needle Penetration – ASTM D1321
  • Colour (Lovibond Scale) – ASTM D6045
  • Viscosity – ASTM D445

We provide various grades for various applications:

Laminating Grades

  • Melting point: 60–80°C (140–175°F)
  • Needle penetration @25°C: More than 25°F
  • Suitable for coatings, flexible packaging, and moisture barriers.

Hardening Grades

  • Melting point: 80–93°C
  • Needle penetration @25°C: Less than 25
  • Suitable for rigid formulations, electrical insulation, and structural reinforcement.

Production Process

Our microcrystalline wax is recovered in the processing of heavy distillate fractions that are being manufactured in lubricant oil production. The material is de-oiled, filtered and hydro-treated to further purify it—eliminating objectionable odor and discoloration, and enhancing the final product’s clarity, texture, and performance.

This rigorous process enables Royal Paraffin to supply waxes that comply with the high requirements of technical and cosmetic sectors.

Packaging options

For convenient handling and storage, our microcrystalline wax is offered in:

  • 5 kg solid slabs
  • Carton or gunny sack packing
  • Pelletized units for bulk orders and automated systems

Custom packaging is provided upon request to meet special customer requirements and logistic demands.
